Brahmatal Trek is a popular winter trekking destination located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. The trek is named after the Brahmatal Lake, which is located at an altitude of 3,840 meters above sea level. The region is surrounded by snow-capped peaks of Nanda Ghunti and Trishul, which offer breath-taking views throughout the trek.
The flora and fauna of the region are diverse and unique, with oak and rhododendron forests being the prominent ones. The trek also offers sightings of rare species of birds like The Himalayan Monal and Golden Eagle. In terms of wildlife, trekkers may spot animals like foxes, musk deer, and sometimes even Himalayan black bears.
The culture of the region is deeply rooted in the Hindu traditions, and the trek offers a glimpse into the local way of life. Trekkers can witness the traditional architecture of the houses and temples, and also interact with the friendly locals.

The total Brahmatal trek duration is 6 days including a road journey from Kathgodam/ Rishikesh. The trek distance is around 22-25 km long, starting from Lohajung village and ending at the same place and usually takes around 4 days to complete, including camping at various locations. The trek offers breath-taking views of the Himalayan ranges, including Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti, Mrigthuni, Maiktoli and many more peaks.
Brahmatal Trek route covers a varied terrain of forests, meadows, and snow-covered trails. The trek starts from Lohajung, and the trail passes through Begum Top, Bekaltal, Jhandi Top before reaching Brahmatal Lake. The return journey trails go through Brahmatal, Tilandi, Daldum before reaching Lohajung.
The Brahmatal Trek difficulty level is moderate and suitable for beginners. The trail involves a gradual ascent and does not require technical climbing skills. However, the trek involves walking on snow-covered trails, which can be challenging for some.

December to February: These months are considered the best time to go for Brahmatal Trek as the trek offers a picturesque view of snow-clad mountains. However, it is important to note that this trek can be quite challenging during this time due to extreme cold weather.
March to April: The weather during these months is pleasant, making it an ideal time to go for the Brahmatal Trek. The trek offers a beautiful view of the Himalayas, and the weather is perfect for trekking.
Winter (December to February): The winter months are the coldest, with temperatures dropping to sub-zero levels. The temperature during the day ranges from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius, and at night, it can drop to -10 to -15 degrees Celsius. The trek is covered in snow, making it a beautiful experience.
Spring (March to May): The temperature during the day ranges from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, and at night, it can drop to 0 to -5 degrees Celsius. The weather during the spring season is pleasant, and the trek is covered in a blanket of lush greenery.
Summer (June to August): The temperature during the day ranges from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, and at night, it can drop to 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. The summer season witnesses heavy rainfall, making the trek challenging.
Autumn (September to November): The temperature during the day ranges from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, and at night, it can drop to 0 to -5 degrees Celsius. The weather during the autumn season is pleasant, and the trek offers a beautiful view of the autumn leaves.
If you are planning to embark on the Brahmatal Trek, you must be aware of the accommodation options available en route. Lohajung base camp, a remote village in Uttarakhand, is the starting point of this beautiful trek. However, accommodation options here are limited, and trekkers must be prepared to share rooms on a triple or quad basis, with dormitories also available.
During the trek, you will be provided with spacious and comfortable tents on a twin, triple and quad sharing basis. The tents are perfect for resting and enjoying the serenity of nature after a long day of trekking. For female trekkers, separate tents and rooms are available, ensuring privacy and safety during the trip.
The meals start from day 1 dinner and continue till day 6 morning tea. During the trek, the trekkers are served healthy and delicious hot meals that include breakfast, lunch, evening tea with snacks, hot soup, and dinner with daily different desserts. The meals are carefully crafted to provide the necessary nutrition for the trekkers to complete the trek successfully.
To keep the trekkers hydrated, hot drinking water is provided daily at the campsite. This ensures that the trekkers remain energized throughout the day and are not affected by altitude sickness.
When planning an active trip, it’s important to consider how to stay comfortable in changing weather conditions. The key to achieving maximum comfort with minimum weight is by layering appropriately. Versatile layers that can be mixed and matched provide the right amount of insulation, ventilation, and weather protection.

Make sure to pack wisely and leave behind any unnecessary items to keep your backpack light. A well-planned packing list ensures a safe and comfortable trek, allowing you to fully enjoy the beauty of nature.
Mule/Porter Bag Offloading:
If you don’t want to carry your backpack you can give it to porter/Mules, but you have to inform us in advance.
Clock/ Baggage Room for Extra Luggage:
Trekkers can utilize the luggage storage facility at the Lohajung base camp to store their extra belongings before embarking on the Brahmatal trek. However, it is recommended to avoid keeping any valuable items in the storage, to ensure the safety of their possessions.
Nomad Adventures will arrange a vehicle for you from the pickup point in Dehradun/Rishikesh for Joshimath, however, there are additional charges for that, if it is not included in the package.
Route 1 Via Kathgodam
The reach Kathgodam the nearest best Railway/Bus station is Kathgodam/Haldwani. From there 9-12 hrs. road journey takes us to Lohajung (Basecamp of Brahmatal Trek) via Bhimtal, Almora, Kausani, Gwaldam and Dewal. Kathgodam to Lohajung distance is around 230 km and the distance from Delhi to Lohajung via Kathgodam is approx. 516 km.
Route 2 Via Rishikesh
If you plan to come via rishikesh then the nearest best Railway or Bus station will be Haridwar/Rishikesh. From there 9-10 hr journey takes us to Lohajung via Rishikesh, Devaprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag, Tharali and Dewal. Rishikesh to Lohajung distance is around 252 km and the distance from Delhi to Lohajung via Rishikesh is approx. 490 km.
Note:  Always book your return flight/train tickets after including the buffer day in your itinerary. Buffer days are kept for unforeseen conditions in the mountains, if not used; you can use them for sightseeing in Rishikesh.
We pitch our campsites near water sources. Two litres of water should be sufficient for your trek. You will find water sources on the trek to refill your water bottles. Your trek leader will brief you about these before starting the day’s trek.
During the trek, toilet tents will be set up along each campsite. In a toilet tent, there will be a deep pit where one can answer nature's call. There will be a mound of soil and a shovel to cover it up. You'll have to use toilet paper in these dry toilets. This is the most hygienic and convenient way to answer nature’s call into the wild. Please use plain toilet paper and refrain from using wet wipes since these are not biodegradable.
If it rains, we will continue our trek as planned. Rain should not be a problem if you have a poncho. Carry a backpack cover for extra protection from rain for your belongings.
Alcohol is dangerous in extreme cold, especially at high altitudes. Contrary to what people believe, alcohol does not make you warmer. Instead, it opens your pores, making your body colder. Moreover, it dehydrates you very quickly. Hence consumption of alcohol is absolutely prohibited on all Nomad Adventures treks. Anyone found with alcohol is quickly removed from the trek. Nomad Adventures treks also prohibit smoking.
However, there are shops on the base camp in Lohajung that rent shoes, jackets, trekking poles, headlamps, etc.
You don’t need special snowshoes. For the trek, a good waterproof trekking shoe is sufficient. When there is snow, we provide micro spikes and gaiters.
Trekking poles provide stability, balance, and fatigue reduction.
The minimum age limit is 7 years. A parent or guardian should accompany minors between 7 and 17 years old. The trek is open to anyone below 65 as long as they follow a fitness regimen before participating.
Brahmatal is an easy trek but requires trekkers to be physically fit. The minimum age eligibility is 7 years. If your child is capable of adapting to mountain conditions and walking every day, then indeed yes! It is recommended to maintain good physical stamina before coming on the trek.
Lohajung is the last electricity charging point. You’ll get a full network in Lohajung and intermittent signals around the campsites and Brahmatal summit. However, come prepared for the possibility of power cuts. It is good to carry your power banks and extra batteries for your camera.
All high-altitude treks come with their share of risks. We pay utmost importance to the safety of trekkers. While we do our bit to ensure a trekker is safe, we also expect any trekker who is enrolling with us to know what could go wrong, and if it does, how to tackle it.
You can leave some luggage at the base camp in Lohajung since you will be starting and returning to the same point. However, make sure you do not leave any valuables. Any loss or damage to belongings is not the responsibility of Nomad Adventures.
